Shaping the future of IELTS: How MTS is supporting the next generation of IELTS Teachers
Matthew Steele

In today’s interconnected world, the ability to communicate in English opens doors: academic doors, career doors, and even international borders. And when it comes to proving English proficiency on the global stage, few qualifications carry the weight and reputation of the IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) test.
In today’s interconnected world, the ability to communicate in English opens doors: academic doors, career doors, and even international borders. And when it comes to proving English proficiency on the global stage, few qualifications carry the weight and reputation of the IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) test.
As one of the most trusted and recognised English language tests worldwide, IELTS is used by over 12,500 organisations across more than 140 countries. From universities and governments to employers and immigration authorities, the IELTS name signals a candidate’s readiness to thrive in an English-speaking environment.
But behind every successful IELTS candidate is often a skilled, knowledgeable, and confident IELTS teacher. And that’s where MTS is making a world-leading difference, showing its commitment to the future of IELTS and the people that teach IELTS.
As well as being a global leader in IELTS testing (we have 19 test venues in the UK and Ireland, and our first of many more soon to come in Brazil), MTS is also a global leader in IELTS teacher training. We offer online courses for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers to become fully qualified IELTS instructors, giving them additional credentials in the ever-competitive world of teaching. We are delighted to now be launching the world’s first fully structured and accredited suite of IELTS Teacher Training Courses: a comprehensive pathway from beginner to expert, designed to support and upskill teachers at every stage of their journey.
A groundbreaking three-tier programme
The MTS IELTS teacher training programme is divided into three progressive levels:
Beginner Course: Introduction to Teaching IELTS: This 18-week course is perfect for EFL teachers who are new to IELTS. The course lays a solid foundation in IELTS assessment criteria, test format, and strategies for teaching the four key skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The course also addresses common challenges faced by both teachers and students.
Intermediate Course: Reflective Practice for IELTS Teachers. This 12-week programme is designed to support teachers in refining their IELTS teaching techniques through thoughtful experimentation and self-reflection. This course is for teachers with some IELTS experience who want to deepen their understanding and refine their techniques. It covers nuanced teaching strategies and classroom application, as well as how to prepare students for high-band scores.
Advanced Course: Certificate for Practising Teachers: IELTS Preparation. This 20-week course is validated by Trinity College London at Level 6. The course focuses on resource assessment, adaptation, and creation tailored to IELTS preparation. This is a flagship, in-depth course aimed at experienced IELTS professionals seeking mastery. This course is designed to elevate teachers to expert-level status, preparing them to lead IELTS programmes and mentor other instructors.
The first two courses are accredited by ALAP (Awarding Language Acquisition for Professionals); a respected name in English language education quality assurance and all participants will receive an ALAP-issued certificate. The Advanced Course, meanwhile, provides teachers with a certificate from the prestigious Trinity College London, a global leader in qualifications and assessments in languages.
This unique blend of progressive learning, accreditation, and real-world relevance makes the MTS training pathway unlike anything else currently available.
