MTS is proud to support the NHS’s 75th birthday in the UK, with 1,500 healthcare workers sitting IELTS tests at MTS’s UK-wide test venues in the first half of 2023

The UK’s highly cherished National Health Service, abbreviated to NHS, was officially launched by the Labour Party’s Aneurin Bevan, at the Park Hospital (now known as the Trafford General) in Manchester on 5 July 1948. Today we both mark and celebrate the NHS and its value in bringing health and prosperity to people living in all parts of the UK, and we congratulate and thank all the NHS healthcare professionals working in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

On 5 July 1948, the NHS took on 180,000 privately-run hospital beds, around 125,000 nurses and around 5,000 doctors. Even at the beginning of the NHS’s existence there had been healthcare professional vacancies that needed filling, and the NHS has been on an on-going journey of growth of its workforce and even now (in 2023), there are significant numbers of new healthcare professionals from outside the UK joining the existing UK workforce.
One of the requirements for workers to begin their careers in the UK’s healthcare sector is to demonstrate a certain standard of proficiency in English. This is because clear and effective communication in English is key to achieving high-quality care and maintaining public trust in the various healthcare professions. Taking the British Council’s IELTS test, offered by MTS at 23 venues across the UK, is still the gold-standard and most trusted way to prove your level of English for entering the UK’s healthcare sector.
We are proud to announce that we have, in the first half of 2023, welcomed 1,500 healthcare professionals through our doors to take the IELTS test with MTS! These 1,500 customers of MTS include 650 Doctors, 600 Nurses, 150 Dentists and 100 Allied Health Professionals (eg Radiographers, Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dietitians and Pharmacists). We are welcoming Doctors from a total of 66 different countries (mostly British, Nigerian and Indian), Nurses from 42 countries (mostly coming from Nigeria, India, Romania, Ghana and the Philippines) and Dentists from 25 countries (mostly coming from India, Pakistan, Sudan and Egypt).
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS on this momentous day, we would like to also thank all healthcare workers who have taken an IELTS test with MTS and we look forward to welcoming many more as the NHS works hard to fill the vacancies in the workforce to provide the very best care for the UK population.
