The laser lights, the enormous on-stage digital screens, the glitter, the glam, the costumes, and of course the glorious (and sometimes eccentric) songs; it's that special time of year again when Europe (and, curiously, Australia also joins in) unites in a joyful spectacle of music and community spirit. Yes, Eurovision 2025 is upon us, with the first Eurovision Song Contest semi-final taking place this evening, from the host city of Basel, in Switzerland, on Tuesday 13 May, a second semi-final will be broadcast on Thursday 15 May, and the final will be broadcast on Saturday 17 May 2025.
What makes Eurovision special
The Eurovision Song Contest is the longest-running annual international televised music competition in the world, and has been running annually since 1956. Around 40 countries now regularly take part in the competition, and the spectacle has always had the power to bring people together in a symphony of voices. From heartfelt ballads to upbeat pop anthems, this year’s contest reminds us that music is indeed the universal language.
Unity, diversity and letting love shine
But beyond the sequins and pyrotechnics, Eurovision teaches us about unity, diversity, and the beauty of shared dreams. Just as the classic 1997 UK Eurovision-winning song “Love Shine a Light” from Katrina and the Waves famously urges, "Let our love shine a light in every corner of our hearts", I believe that English language communication, like music, is a bridge that connects us all.
