IELTS One Skill Retake remains popular with MTS's IELTS test takers
Matthew Steele

IELTS One Skill Retake lets test takers retake a single skill instead of the full IELTS test. Find out how it works, who is eligible, and how to book one.
What is One Skill Retake?
IELTS One Skill Retake is a feature designed to help you get your desired IELTS test score without retaking the full IELTS test, and was launched in the UK and Ireland in March 2024. MTS has been delivering IELTS One Skill Retakes since the launch, and has welcomed nearly 1,000 One Skill Retake customers across all our venues so far.
How does it work?
If you want to improve your overall score, with IELTS One Skill Retake you can retake any one of the four IELTS skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking. And if you perform better on the retake, this new score can get added to your previous IELTS results form, and you may end up with a better overall IELTS band score.
If you choose IELTS One Skill Retake, you will receive a second IELTS Test Report Form with your IELTS One Skill Retake score, the scores from your original test and an overall CEFR score. And the great thing is that you can choose whether you would like to use your old or new IELTS Test Report Form for the skill you retook.
IELTS One Skill Retake is available to test takers who have completed a full IELTS on Computer test and must be booked within 60 days of the original IELTS test being taken, and can only be taken at the same IELTS test centre that you took your original IELTS test.
How do I book it?
Once you have taken a full IELTS on Computer test, and you get your results on the IELTS Test Taker Portal, you can go to the section that says “Didn’t get the score you needed?”, then click ‘See my options’ and you can select either ‘Remark my test’ (this is also known as an IELTS Enquiry on Results) or ‘Retake a part of your test’ (IELTS One Skill Retake). With One Skill Retake, you can retake just one skill and add that result to your previous IELTS test.
What else do I need to know?
Beware! At the moment, not all institutions accept an IELTS overall score that has been modified by a One Skill Retake, so make sure you check your institution accepts One Skill Retake before booking it.
At MTS we offer both the IELTS Enquiry on Results service (where your original IELTS tests is remarked by a different examiner and may result in a better score) as well as the IELTS One Skill Retake service.
You can also request both an IELTS Enquiry on Results as well as book an IELTS One Skill Retake concurrently.
And you can even do an IELTS Enquiry on Results request on a completed IELTS One Skill Retake result!
You can find out more about IELTS One Skill Retake at the British Council’s website which also has some informative short videos explaining how it works.
